Girard Bengali and Wigdor LLP File Federal Lawsuit Against Songwriter/Producer “The-Dream”
In a powerful move for accountability and justice, Girard Bengali, APC and Wigdor LLP recently filed a federal lawsuit in the Central District of California on behalf of Chanaaz Mangroe against Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Terius “The-Dream” Gesteelde-Diamant. The case also names Contra Paris, LLC, and Epic Records, highlighting issues of alleged trafficking, abuse, and breaches of fiduciary duty.
Ms. Mangroe, known professionally as Channii Monroe, came to the United States in 2012 under an O-1B visa, which recognizes extraordinary talent in the arts. She was approached in 2014 by The-Dream’s associate with a potential recording deal that led to a relationship, which Ms. Mangroe asserts became a series of manipulative and abusive encounters. The lawsuit details that the artist leveraged his industry influence to subject her to physical and psychological manipulation, including forced acts, promises of sponsorship, and threats to her career if she left.
The complaint also alleges that The-Dream’s labels, including Contra Paris and Epic Records, turned a blind eye to Ms. Mangroe’s suffering, failing to protect her and, as a result, contributing to the lasting impact on her personal and professional life.
Ms. Mangroe’s Perspective
Speaking out, Ms. Mangroe shared, “Breaking the silence about the trauma I faced has been difficult, but necessary. My story needs to be told so others can find the courage to speak up as well.”
