Elderly abuse costs Americans billions

People in the Los Angeles area probably recognize that the elderly are easy targets for various types of abuse. Many unscrupulous people, including supposed loved ones, use a variety of tricks and scams to take the hard-earned money of senior citizens and apply it to their own selfish ends.

California employers can learn a lesson from BGC Financial

A woman who filed a sexual harassment claim while working at BGC Financial said that she was retaliated against after speaking up. She filed a lawsuit seeking $30 million in punitive damages and another $30 million in compensatory damages against the Wall Street firm. In an arbitration hearing, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) awarded the woman $1.2 million. It agreed that she had experienced a hostile working environment and had been the victim of retaliation.

Lawsuit alleges discrimination at litigation support firm

Women in professional positions in California continue to experience pregnancy discrimination despite their achievements on the job. One former account representative has filed suit against a litigation services company, alleging that she was terminated from her job only 10 days before her C-section was scheduled. She is accusing the company of gender discrimination and retaliation in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. She says that soon after she announced her pregnancy at work, she was targeted for different treatment than her co-workers.

What to do after being handed the Form U5

As Wall Street's standards continue to change and evolve, many financial advisers in Los Angeles and around the country are being terminated for relatively minor infractions. Once they receive a Form U5, they must come up with a long-term plan for getting back on their feet. While some might be tempted to file a wrongful termination complaint, it is often better to have a Form U5 with favorable language so that they can quickly transition to a new firm.
